Death can occur as a result of natural or unnatural causes. Natural causes are due internal factors like illness or diseases. Unnatural causes are due to external factors like a motor vehicle accident.

Lump sum occupational disability benefits pay out when permanent disability, caused by illness, injury or an accident, results in the life insured being unable to perform the duties of their occupation. Functional impairment cover protects you from the long-term financial impact of permanent illnesses or injuries like paraplegia, blindness and dementia.

As a requirement of the Pension Funds Act, the death benefit is paid to the dependants and nominees (if appointed) of the deceased. The trustees of the retirement fund are responsible for allocating the benefit to the dependants and nominees.
